Overview

Author Michael McDowell, known for his chilling Blackwater series, left behind the unfinished manuscript of Candles Burning on his death in 1999. His close friend, Tabitha King, has taken up where he left off, weaving a Southern gothic fabric of murder, guilt, innocence, corruption, and survival, in the voices of the living and the dead.

Calley Dakin is daddy’s little girl, but her well-born mother persists in contempt for the Dakin name. From an early age, Calley hears things that maybe a little girl shouldn’t hear. But she is just seven when her beloved father is tortured and murdered by two women with no discernible motivation. Calley and her mother find themselves caught up in inexplicable events that exile them to Pensacola Beach, where another woman awaits their presence, a woman who knows what Calley is and who seeks to control her. For Calley has become a force.

The narrator was great but 10 discs into it it honestly has not gotten anywhere. Yes a life story but not scary, shocking,or quite intriguing. I stopped at disc 10.

I really enjoyed this high suspense murder mystery. The characters were all well developed. I would recommend this without hesitation. Mrs. King is a powerful writer and now I am a fan of both her and her husband!

coming of age novel

This novel was OK, but I prefer novels with much stronger plots. It took me forever to get interested in the story, but it's well-written and the reader is good. It's just not my cup of tea. It's much more like a coming of age novel with a slight Southern Gothic flavor. But as I say I didn't feel the plot held together well and was often much too slow for my taste. I like strong characters as well as very strong plots, which this really didn't have. This might have been because two people wrote the book. However, if you are more interested in a character study, then you might like this. I was disappointed.

Tabitha has given her husband a run for his money. This is one of the best books I've ever heard. The narrator should receive an award for accuracy in diction, reflection and for capturing the true essence of the time and place portrayed in the novel. Well done! Excellent Read! New fan Mrs. King!!!
