I got this book and in a month I have listen to the book 3 times. This should be required reading for anyone that travels more then 10 miles from home. Bottom line WOW!
Excellent book and not only valuable to adventurous types. Also some great lessons and understanding for victims of the economic turndown or other trials of life. Highly recommended.
Anyone who loves survival stories and anyone who's passion in life involves getting into survival situations will love this book. The book has two components, woven together seamlessly. First, it tells survival stories that took place in a variety of settings--mountain climbing, backcountry skiing, hiking, ocean sailing, etc. Even if you've heard some of them before, his perspective on them is fascinating. Second, the author uses each story to glean lessons about who lives and who dies in survival situations. He finds the common threads in disparate stories, and explains how people who are very experienced end up making mistakes that may prove fatal. The book delves deeply into the psychology of survival. (One or two sections are a bit dry and scientific--but stick with it--the narrative always picks up.) This is a GREAT book. If you are involved in any risk-taking sports (I'm a backcountry skier), you will enjoy and learn from this book. I bought the paperback & read it again.
