Overview

Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers. In The Power of Now, a #1 national bestseller, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical.

In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present. Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living "present, fully and intensely, in the Now."

I have listened to this book over and over and the author's voice is so soothing and relaxing. Highly recommended as one of the best books of my life.

Life changing book! I hope more and more people can start to see things the way Tolle sees them. Listen to this book somewhere quiet where you can really get into it.

Good but not great

I\'ve tried several of these Zen/semi-spiritual type books, and I usually don\'t make it very far into them. This one is better than average, but I still didn\'t make it all the way through. The first CD lays out some big picture ideas that are helpful in life and the way we think. But it gets a little repetitious after that.

Good info, Cd not great

I love the information in this Cd, however, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the Cd's are not broken up in tracks per chapter, but rather, many chapters are in each track. Each Cd is broken up by only 2 or 3 tracks. Mr. Tolle's writings are very deep and thought provoking. If you were reading the book, you would reread sentences or paragraphs over and over again, until you are able to grasp what he's saying. But with the Cd, if you want to replay something, you have to go back to the beginning of the track and listen to chapter after chapter before you get to the part you wanted to hear again. With this particular audio book, I would say it would be more beneficial to read it rather than listen to it, although, I think the message in this book is awesome.

After picking up the book a couple of different times, I was glad to hear the audiobook. I found the author's voice comforting. I felt like there were some profound things messages in this book, but I also think that some of the advice is impracticle from the standpoint of someone who expects to live and work and interact in the real world. Obviously, being present in the moment is important, but life is not lived without regard to past or future. Interesting food for thought.....

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. One of the most important books I've read because it offers the information and tools to enjoy life even more. I must admit the author should not have narrated the book. His peaceful nature comes across as monotone and is difficult to get past, but the book is worth it so I highly suggest you try. Your life won't be the same!

Worst Narration

Some great material but Eckhart Tolle should not be allowed to narrate his own audiobooks. I listened to this for 20 min. in the car and had to turn it off for fear of falling asleep from the mono tone of his voice. I read the book and it is much better not hearing his voice. Good book but terrible audiobook.

A total waste of time. Don't bother with this rambling, boring book.

Powerful is the only way to describe this audio book. It contains thought prospectives that most of us have never known before. The ideas along with the analysis of how they play out in our lives is genius. A great listen.

Tolle, Eckhart

Eckhart Tolle was born in 1948 in Germany as Ulrich Tolle. He also spent time living in Spain and went on to study at Cambridge university and the University of London in the United Kingdom.

It has been reported that the German born author changed his name from Ulrich to Eckhart because of the German philosopher Meister Eckhart.

Eckhart Tolle's life changed when he was 29 years of age. The author had a spiritual awakening after a long struggle with unhappiness. Tolle dedicated his life to a more spiritual path and set about learning from and experiencing different philosophies and beliefs from around the world.

Eckhart Tolle describes his spiritual awakening in the following paragraph; "For most people, spiritual awakening is a gradual process. Rarely does it happen all at once. When it does, though, it is usually brought about by intense suffering. That was certainly true in my case. For years my life alternated between depression and acute anxiety. One night I woke up in a state of dread and intense fear, more intense than I had ever experienced before. Life seemed meaningless, barren, hostile. It became so unbearable that suddenly the thought came into my mind, "I cannot live with myself any longer." The thought kept repeating itself several times. Suddenly, I stepped back from the thought, and looked at it, as it were, and I became aware of the strangeness of that thought: "If I cannot live with myself, there must be two of me – the I and the self that I cannot live with." And the question arose, "Who is the ‘I’ and who is the self that I cannot live with?" There was no answer to that question, and all thinking stopped. For a moment, there was complete inner silence. Suddenly I felt myself drawn into a whirlpool or a vortex of energy. I was gripped by an intense fear, and my body started to shake. I heard the words, "Resist nothing," as if spoken inside my chest. I could feel myself being sucked into a void. Suddenly, all fear disappeared, and I let myself fall into that void. I have no recollection of what happened after that."

The spiritual author and teacher currently lives in Canada and continues to spread his message of spirituality through seminars, books, audio material, and his official website.
