I kept waiting for the conflict to present itself; it never does. The descriptive passages are beautifully written, but if you're looking for a plot, there isn't one. The characters are well developed and are the reason I continued to listen to this story until the end, despite the fact I was utterly bored by disc 2.
Jane Smiley was born in Los Angeles, grew up in St. Louis, and studied at Vassar and the University of Iowa, where she received her Ph.D. She isthe author of eight other works of fiction. She lives in central California.
