Overview

This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in nineteenth-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life.
At the age of twelve, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home. In a card game with a white Indian named Featherstone, Will wins - for a brief moment - a mysterious girl named Claire, and his passion and desire for her spans this novel. As Will's destiny intertwines with the fate of the Cherokee Indians - including a Cherokee Chief named Bear - he learns how to fight and survive in the face of both nature and men, and eventually, under the Corn Tassel Moon, Will begins the fight against Washington City to preserve the Cherokee's homeland and culture. And he will come to know the truth behind his belief that "only desire trumps time."
Brilliantly imagined, written with great power and beauty by a master of American fiction, Thirteen Moons is a stunning novel about a man's passion for a woman, and how loss, longing and love can shape a man's destiny over the many moons of a life.

Excellent book, with a good reader. Very believeable and easy to follow. I know the main character is fictional, but I would have liked to meet him.

This is an incredible story of bravery set in the early nineteenth century American South. You will be captivated by the story of Will Cooper and how his life changed with the rapidly changing American landscape from 1820 until the almost 1900. I recommend the book for anyone aged 18 or older.

My husband and I both were held spell-bound by this book. The narrator was perfect and the colorful language and description drew us in to the story completely. I felt like I knew the characters personally, and when the story ended it was as if I had lost a friend. Get this book; you will not regret it!

An absolutely delicious book read with tenderness and insight. I enjoyed this more than anything I've listened to in ages. Maybe it was the reader but I liked it so much more than Frazier's "Cold Mountain".

Very good historical fiction. Rambling, insight-filled life story, as if told by one's great-grandfather. Reflective.

Simply said, this is a superb story & an equally superb narration. Will Patton's reading brings the character of Will Cooper to life. I was totally mesmerized and plan on listening to anything I can find that he has narrated!

Gorgeous writing beautifully read. Just the sound of the reader's voice evokes the time and place of the story. It's the self told story of one man's life, but if you're at all attracted to American history, or 'Americana' in general, don't miss this. Yes, bittersweet, it tugs at your heart the whole time. My favorite rental so far.

Both my husband and I loved listening to this book. The language is so rich in detail, it's like listening to a painting being created. Will Patton's performance of the reading is perfect for this novel. A great read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was different from any book I have read or listened to before. The main character was sympathetic, without being flawless. I felt like I had a better understanding for America after listening to it. The narrator really brought the main character to life, in my opinion.
