Overview

A mesmerizing thriller -- told in reverse! The 13th Hour is the story of a man given the chance to go back in time in one-hour increments to prevent a vicious crime from destroying his life.

Nick Quinn is being held in jail, accused of the murder of his beloved wife, Julia. He knows she's dead; he saw her bloody corpse, shot in the head at point-blank range. The police tell him they found the murder weapon with his fingerprints on it in the trunk of his car. Nick is confused, grief-stricken -- and completely innocent.

At 9 p.m. on July 28, a gray-haired gentleman visits Nick in the police interrogation room and asks him a simple question: "If you could get out of here, if you could save her, would you?" He hands Nick a golden talisman that allows Nick to go back in time, one hour at a time, for a total of twelve hours. With each hour that Nick travels back, he finds more clues to the identity of Julia's real killer, but he also discovers that his actions in the past may have unexpected repercussions in the future.

In his race against time to save the woman he loves most in the world, Nick will find that friends become enemies, old loyalties are tested, and Julia's murder is part of a larger scheme that has its roots in greed and vengeance. Nick has the ability to save Julia, the chance to put his own world in balance, but he is venturing down a precarious route. If he hasn't set things right by the thirteenth hour, his desperate attempts to save Julia's life may lead to a far greater catastrophe than he could have ever imagined.

A surprising and utterly original thriller, The 13th Hour is pure page-turning suspense -- full of double crosses, cliffhangers, and shocking revelations.

I enjoyed the twist on time travel in this novel. Well worth listening to. The narrator was enjoyable and the author did a magnificent job of painting the scenes so that I could clearly imagine what was happening. I found myself holding my breath at the very end! My husband finished the book before I did simply because he could not turn it off and go to bed. Get this one, you won't regret it!

Warning: do not listen to this audio book on a long flight like I did--the gruesome airliner crash scenes may cause in-flight paranoia. Nevertheless, here are 13 themes in this suspense novel that will keep you listening for 11 hours: 1) interesting backwards chronology, 2) time travel, 3) manipulating the future, 4) justice and revenge, 5) family secrets, 6) dirty cops, 7) former Soviet Union mobsters, 8) airplane disasters, 9) hidden treasures, 10) high stakes finance, 11) heros verses villians, 12) true love, and 13) likeable good guys verses despicable bad guys!

This book is everything the overview says it is! The backward chronology is only a little confusing for a short time but then you can understand how time proceeds. The author is unusually creative with this device and it works well. Now that I've listened to it once, I want to hear it again, just to be sure I caught everything he offers.

Takes a great leap in the credibility department. Time travel is one thing but this seems to be way out there and explanations are few. However, the story is well written keeping you on the edge all the time. The question of whether we could actually improve our lives if we could turn back time has been addressed many times and here is another.

13 hours

This book is good up to a point. Just because the protagonist jumps back in time, I don't know why the author felt that that also meant that the backstory had to be continually repeated. It got quite boring. It's as if this book is taking place in real time, so it has to take 13 hours to listen to it. I finally gave up (on CD 7) and skipped to the last CD. The ending was gripping - if only it had come sooner!!
